The preparation for Easter begins every year on Ash Wednesday with a service in church to mark the start of Lent.

Traditionally palm crosses from the previous year are burnt and, mixed with oil, they are ‘imposed’ on the forehead of the faithful, making the sign of the cross.  In this service we are reminded of our imperfect humanity and our need of God’s love and compassion.  Though the mood is somber, introspective and subdued, light and hope are never far away as the glory of Easter is constantly in sight.

The season of Lent offers the chance to think more deeply about our faith and relationship with God and to commit ourselves afresh to serve him.  Fasting, prayer and study of God’s word are the central elements of Lent, a cleansing of the heart and mind, to make ready for the abundance of life God promises in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
